Last month, Carlos Castresana the top prosecutor in the U.N.-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) resigned. He listed the overwhelming stresses of the job among some of the reasons for resignation, and his resignation leaves a void in Guatemala’s fight against corruption. For many, this begs the question of whether Guatemala will become the type of safe haven that Columbia was for narcotraficantes before they cleaned up their streets, or whether the person stepping in will have greater luck in eradicating corruption. A very interesting article at the very least.
